These young black students at Pretoria High School for Girls in South Africa are protesting against what they call racist policies at their school. They were allegedly discouraged from speaking their native African languages and wearing their hair naturally in an afro. For black women, hair is many things, a natural God-given beauty of kinky and bouncy curls, a cultural representation, a fashion statement and even at times a political statement -whether we wish it to be or not. The idea that rocking an Afro is seen as revolutionary is odd.
